Key Stage 4 German

At KS4 learners apply their language knowledge in the four skills areas of reading, writing, speaking and listening to a higher level and alongside learning a wider range of vocabulary.

The curriculum is designed to engage our students through the use of interesting and relevant topics covering all sub-strands of the National Curriculum; fostering an appreciation of different cultures and the structure of language.

Students follow a rigorous curriculum in which they follow pre-determined topics to expand their vocabulary and abilities in all 4 skills areas.

There is a great emphasis on detail, the ability to converse in German coherently, to expand on opinions and speak/write/listen/read about current world affair topics.

Students are assessed on regular basis through marking and immediate feedback, short and skills focussed activities in lessons help students to work with their strengths and work to improve other skills.

Students take 4 exams at the end of the 2 year course in each of the skills areas, Reading, Writing, listening and speaking.

Students work on the following topics over the 2 years:

  • Me, my family and friends
  • Marriage and social media
  • Music, cinema, tv, sport, food and drink
  • Germany and its customs
  • Home and where you live
  • Charity and voluntary work
  • The environment, poverty and homelessness
  • Holidays and travel
  • Regions of Germany
  • Life at school
  • University or work? Careers

Alongside this Students have the opportunity to learn about other countries within subjects such as History, Citizenship and PSHRE and thus gain a further insight into various cultures and the wider world.
