Careers

At College Central we work closely with East Sussex County Council and our allocated Enterprise coordinator in order to ensure that the careers offer is meaningful to our students and is able to plan for their future path.

A young person’s career reflects the progress they make in learning and work. It is part of the vision and mission of College Central that all students will have access to a planned programme of activities to help them choose post 16 pathways that are right for them and to be able to manage their careers, sustain employment and achieve personal and economic wellbeing throughout their lives. A programme of careers education in addition to impartial information, advice and guidance is considered best practice in maintained schools and academies for Y7-11.

The Education Act 2011 places schools under a duty to secure access to independent careers guidance for pupils in Y7-11 including those with special educational needs (SEN) or disabilities 2012. It removes the duty to provide a careers education programme: College Central will continue to offer careers education and careers related qualifications as part of the CEIAG offer.

The CEIAG programme is designed to help students make the most of themselves and their opportunities. In particular, it aims to help them:

  • Develop knowledge and understanding of work, learning and careers
  • Extend understanding of opportunities in learning and work
  • Make good use of information and guidance
  • Develop skills to review, plan, make decisions, present effectively and cope with change

The Gatsby Benchmarks

In 2014, Lord Sainsbury’s Gatsby Charitable Foundation published a report by Professor Sir John Holman, Adviser in Education at the Gatsby Charitable Foundation, titled “Good Career Guidance.” The report identified eight benchmarks that are the core dimensions of good careers and enterprise provision in schools.

The Gatsby Benchmarks have a key role in:

• raising young people’s aspirations and promoting access to all career pathways

• enabling all young people to develop the skills and outlook they need to achieve career wellbeing, including adaptability and resilience

• underpinning the Department for Education guidance to schools on meeting their statutory responsibility for careers guidance.

As a result of this research, the Department of Education updated the Careers Strategy for schools highlighting how each school can fulfil all of the 8 Gatsby Benchmarks. The Careers Enterprise Company were set up by the Government to help support schools with their career’s guidance. They have produced many supporting documents and research that have helped schools improve and develop their careers programme. Schools use these benchmarks to assess their Careers provision that they offer to the students.
