KS1

Key Stage 1 Physical Education

Key stage one physical education starts to develop “I can”. Lessons focus on building a love of activity and confidence in mobility, whilst encouraging group cohesion, movement and motor skills.

 

Ks1 pe1

 

At key stage one the main focus for pupils is the development of fundamental movement and motor skills. Pupils will become increasingly competent and confident in a variety of activities that support co-ordination, agility and balance. As well as communication and group cohesion. Activities are planned to support exploration and fun within a sporting environment creating strong foundations to encourage Students participation in sport as they Move through the school. At key stage one pupils will have weekly swimming lessons, developing water competency and stroke work, as well as participating in a range of sports.

At key stage one pupils are assessed using ‘I can’. This is a working document that works alongside the early years functional skills. Pupils with the support of staff will document their progress throughout the year preparing them to transition into key stage two.

KS2

Key Stage 2 Physical Education

Key stage two physical education focuses on “show me”. Students will develop basic skills learnt in key stage one, and be able to show their understanding practically, when linking skills to relevant sporting activities.

 

PE KS2 a

Key stage two physical education enables students to broaden and explore their range of skills, learning how to utilise them in different ways and to link them to make actions and sequences of movement. The main priority is embedding and promoting a love of exercise and activity whilst encouraging key values such as collaborations, partnership working, fair play and respect for themselves and others. Students will have weekly swimming lessons, developing water competency and stroke work, as well as participating in a range of sports. At key stage two pupils will begin to grasp the concept rules and tactics whilst and recognising their own and others success in competition.

Students are assessed in three core ways: Red, Amber, Green ratings, ‘EBI’ assessments and teacher assessment.

KS3

Key Stage 3 Physical Education

Curriculum statement linking Key stages :

Key Stage 3 Physical Education enables development on the fundamental skills learned in key stage two, moving away from ‘show me’ to ‘tell him’. Students will begin to show confidence within their physical literacy and develop a wider vocabulary in regard to sport and exercise whilst participating in wider range of activities and begin to experience more complex rules

Curriculum overview for specific key stage

At Key Stage 3 Students will experience and develop their understanding of the benefits of exercise and activity. In addition, students develop the impact of physical education on themselves. Core themes within lessons enable students to begin to access fundamental theoretical content, and develop students’ knowledge and understanding of how an active lifestyle has a positive impact upon an individual. Students will learn and implement correct rules and regulations relevant to sport and activity. Personal development in areas such as, resilience, team work, communication, coping with defeat and striving for excellence are just some areas where physical education has a whole school impact on New Horizons students.

Students are assessed in three core ways: weekly written self-assessment and teacher assessment, a mixture of individual and whole class feedback, and at the end of each block of work students will complete Individual ‘EBI’ assessments. Assessment will focus on practical application and contextual understanding.

KS4

Key Stage 4 Physical Education

Key Stage 4 Physical Education enables students to explore and develop their skills and understanding through a variety of elements. Personal development runs throughout the delivery of physical activities. Students experience a wide range of activities that not only develop their physical well-being but have positive impacts upon the social and mental wellbeing as well.

PE KS4 a

At Key Stage 4, students are given the opportunity to choose their pathway within PE taking on either the GCSE course, or the core PE course.

During their study of GCSE PE, students will develop and broaden their knowledge in how physical activities impact upon an individual. Over the course of two years Students will apply a range of practical activities that will supplement the theoretical and analytical aspect of the subject and be assessed practically in a variety of activities predominantly within their areas of strength.

Core PE will develop the student’s engagement in leading a fit and healthy lifestyle with a focus the cognitive aspect, such as tactics, out witting an opponent and the personal psychological health benefits of exercise.

All pupils on the GCSE PE course will be entered for the GCSE short course in Year 10 which is a combination of 40% practical component and a 60% written examination.

All pupils on the GCSE PE course will be entered for the GCSE full course in Year 11, which is a combination of 10% coursework, 30% practical component and a 60% written examination.
