KS3

Key Stage 3 Art and Design

Art, Craft and Design embody much of the highest forms of human creativity. A high-quality Art and Design education should engage, inspire and challenge pupils, equipping them with the knowledge and skills to experiment, invent and create their own works of art, craft and design.

Art and Design stimulates creativity and imagination. Students at New Horizons are given every opportunity to develop skills in drawing, painting, print making, textiles, design and construction. Through the delivery of an exciting and diverse range of projects, students are able to express themselves creatively through independent learning, practical application and reflection.

Students study the life and work of great Artists, architects and designers. As students’ progress they will develop a richer understanding of Art and design, how they both reflect and shape our history and contribute to other cultures.

The nature of creativity provides students with the opportunity to implement a wide range of skills that benefit them way beyond the Art room. Students participate in a selection of further work resulting from activities such as skills-based workshops; mini and/or foundation projects; responses to gallery, museum or site visits.

KS4

Key Stage 4 Art and Design

GCSE level study allows for progression from Key Stage 3 while providing a foundation for further studies. Students actively engage in the creative process of art, craft and design in order to develop as effective and independent learners.

Art KS4

In KS4 students follow the AQA Art and Design (8201) specification in Art, craft and Design. Each student will select and present a sustained project developed in response to a subject, theme, task or brief evidencing the journey from initial engagement with an idea(s) to the realisation of intentions. This will give students the opportunity to demonstrate, through an extended creative response, their ability to draw together different areas of knowledge, skills and/or understanding from across their course of study.

This title promotes learning across a variety of experiences and through various processes, tools, techniques, materials and resources to generate different kinds of evidence of working and outcomes.

A selection of further work resulting from activities such as trials and experiments; skills-based workshops; mini and/or foundation projects; responses to gallery, museum or site visits; work placements; independent study and evidence of the student’s specific role in any group work undertaken.
