Subject Curriculum Statements 2023 | Mathematics

Mathematics Subject Lead:

Key Stage 3 overview:

Students consolidate and extend previously learned content from KS2, as well as developing fluency in new learning under the five key banners of Number, Algebra, Geometry, Ratio and Proportion, Statistics and Probability. Students develop a broad range of skills to support increasingly more demanding problems, with an emphasis on problem solving, tackling multi-step and multi-topic problems and relating concepts in maths to real-life contexts.

Implementation - What will I do?

  • Develop confidence in Maths
  • Group and class discussions
  • Create study materials to support independence
  • Peer collaboration on data handling and other projects
  • Practise drawing on a bank of knowledge to verbally and in writing communicate justification for answers given
  • Tackling problem solving based questions that require an extension of fluently learned skills

Impact - What will I learn?

  • Develop confidence in the Key skills in Mathematics.  Using techniques in a broad range of cross curricular applications and real-life situations and contexts.
  • Key mathematical terms in Number such as factor, multiple and prime number
  • Deepen understanding of the four operations, and be able to apply these confidently and in a multitude of ways
  • Extend knowledge of fractions, percentages and decimals, to include increasingly more complex arithmetic
  • Develop geometric knowledge in areas such as volume, angles and polygons
  • How to formulate and manipulate algebraic formulae in a range of contexts
  • Apply understanding of multiplication and division within ratio and proportion, with an emphasis on real life links e.g currency conversion, metric unit conversion and other practical applications 
  • Confidently tackle calculations that involve a multi-topic, problem solving skills

Key Stage 4 overview:

GCSE level study takes pupils’ broad understanding of different mathematical concepts and develops them further, ensuring that pupils have a deeper understanding to support them to see math as an interlinked system, with relevance in all aspects of their lives. Under the five key banners of: Number, Algebra, Geometry, Ratio and Proportion, Statistics and Probability, pupils will be challenged to not only recognise how interlinked these concepts are, but to manipulate and interpret them in a range of contexts. As pupils progress towards adulthood, they will be guided to understand how their skills may be transferable in the growing jobs market, and wider life more generally.

Impact - What will I learn?

  • Number: Develop the four operations, formal written methods; applying fluency in fractions
  • Algebra: Recognise the use of algebra in plethora of situations, and be able to manipulate formulae fluently
  • Geometry: Extend previously learned material, with a focus on large-scale, multi-skill concepts
  • Ratio and Proportion: Apply understanding of multiplication and division within ratio and proportion, with an emphasis on real life links e.g currency conversion, metric unit conversion and other practical applications
  • Statistics and Probability: Understand the language of change and calculate the numerical value of probability, applying this in a range of real-life concepts. Use and interpret data confidently, and be able to make judgements on how best to effectively interrogate data.
  • Develop analytical, methodological & logical ways of using data in a range of real-life contexts
  • Confidently tackle calculations that involve a multi-topic, problem solving skill set

Assessment:

100% examination based qualification. 3 exams in total.

  • Paper 1 (33.3%) – Non-Calculator Paper

  • Paper 3 (33.3%) – Calculator Paper
