Physical Education

Subject lead: Aaron Stenning & Ben Holbrook

Key stage 2 overview

Pupils will continue to apply and develop a broader range of skills, learning how to use them in different ways and to link them to make actions and sequences of movement. They will enjoy communicating, collaborating and competing with each other. They will develop an understanding of how to improve in different physical activities and sports and learn how to evaluate and recognise their own success.

What will I learn?

Pupils will be taught to develop their techniques, including their control and use of equipment (where appropriate), with creativity, experimentation and an increasing awareness of different kinds of sports. Pupils will be taught:

  • use running, jumping, throwing and catching in isolation and in combination
  • play competitive games, modified where appropriate [for example, badminton, basketball, cricket, football, hockey, netball, rounders and tennis], and apply basic principles suitable for attacking and defending
  • develop flexibility, strength, technique, control and balance [for example, through athletics and gymnastics]
  • take part in outdoor and adventurous activity challenges both individually and within a team
  • compare their performances with previous ones and demonstrate improvement to achieve their personal best

Key stage 3 overview

Pupils will build on and embed the physical development and skills learned in key stages 1 and 2, become more competent, confident and expert in their techniques, and apply them across different sports and physical activities. They will understand what makes a performance effective and how to apply these principles to their own and others’ work. They will develop the confidence and interest to get involved in exercise, sports and activities out of school and in later life, and understand and apply the long-term health benefits of physical activity.

What will I learn?

Pupils will be taught to:

  • use a range of tactics and strategies to overcome opponents in direct competition through team and individual games [for example, badminton, basketball, cricket, football, hockey, netball, rounders, rugby and tennis]
  • develop their technique and improve their performance in other competitive sports [for example, athletics and gymnastics]
  • perform dances using advanced dance techniques within a range of dance styles and forms
  • take part in outdoor and adventurous activities which present intellectual and physical challenges and be encouraged to work in a team, building on trust and developing skills to solve problems, either individually or as a group
  • analyse their performances compared to previous ones and demonstrate improvement to achieve their personal best
  • take part in competitive sports and activities outside school through community links or sports clubs.

Key Stage 4 GCSE overview

Students will develop knowledge and understanding of the key body systems and how they impact on health, fitness and performance in physical activity and sport.

Exam Board Syllabus

You will have a minimum of 1 classroom theory-based lesson per week. Practically you will be assessed on your ability in your 2 or 3 strongest sporting activities, depending on the exam you are entered in to. This should be your most confident sports and something you practice outside of school, (for example; do you play for a sports team outside of school?) Full Course: The Non-Examined Assessment or ‘practical’ (3 sports) is worth 30% of the GCSE with an additional 10% being a written assignment in which you reflect on your own performance and create a Personal Exercise Programme. The other 60% is gained through a written exam that cover topics such as Anatomy and Physiology, Movement Analysis and Social Aspects of sport.

Key Stage 4 GCSE PE Assessment

  • Component 1 (Exam) 60%
  • Component 2 (Practical Assessment) 30%
  • Component 3 (Training Program) 10%
