Key stage 3 overview

Pupils study a range of fictional texts, developing their reading skills, vocabulary, spelling and grammar. They will also develop their imagination through visualising scenes from the texts through drawing, poster making and Drama. The students will use these skills to develop their comprehension and their ability in using punctuation. From here, they will learn the conventions of story writing and expressing their opinions through a series of written tasks for different situations.

Implementation - What will I do?

· Enquiry based learning.

· Regular spelling, punctuation and reading exercises.

· Group and class discussions and debates.

· Use of ICT to complete written tasks.

· Comprehension exercises.

· Interpretation of language and structure to deduce meaning.

· Practicing written description and explanation to convey understanding and justified reasoning skills.

· Problem solving and thinking skills to address a range of historical, literary and global issues.

· Take part in Drama production.

· Introduction to the works of Shakespeare

Impact - What will I learn?

· Knowledge and understanding of the conventions of writing for different purposes.

· Develop their confidence in reading aloud in class.

· The difference between implicit and explicit information.

· The importance of poetry and drama to express ideas, opinions and emotions.

· Develop understanding of social, historical and political issues addressed through literature.

· Work as a collective to produce and perform a play.

· Understand the power of words and language, and how literature and poetry can affect people’s ideas and beliefs.

· How to write using conventions of Standard English and increase vocabulary.

· How to analyse language and interpret the writer’s message.

AQA GCSE English Language

Subject content

Students will draw upon a range of texts as reading stimulus and engage with creative as well as real and relevant contexts. Students will have opportunities to develop higher-order reading and critical thinking skills that encourage genuine enquiry into different topics and themes. This specification will ensure that students can read fluently and write effectively. Students will be able to demonstrate a confident control of Standard English and write grammatically correct sentences, deploying figurative language and analysing texts. For GCSE English Language students should:

• read fluently, and with good understanding, a wide range of texts from the 19th, 20th and 21st centuries, including literature and literary non-fiction as well as other writing such as reviews and journalism

• read and evaluate texts critically and make comparisons between texts

• summarise and synthesise information or ideas from texts

• use knowledge gained from wide reading to inform and improve their own writing

• write effectively and coherently using Standard English appropriately

• use grammar correctly and punctuate and spell accurately

• acquire and apply a wide vocabulary, alongside a knowledge and understanding of grammatical terminology, and linguistic conventions for reading, writing and spoken language

There are two examination papers which are worth 50% of the grade each
