Art and Design

Subject lead: Alison Everett

Key stage 2 overview

Art, craft and design embody some of the highest forms of human creativity. A high-quality art and design education should engage, inspire and challenge pupils, equipping them with the knowledge and skills to experiment, invent and create their own works of art, craft and design. As pupils progress, they should be able to think critically and develop a more rigorous understanding of art and design. They should also know how art and design both reflect and shape our history, and contribute to the culture, creativity and wealth of our nation.

Implementation - What will I do?

· Drawing.

· Painting.

· Sculpture.

· Printmaking.

· Mixed Media.

· Textiles.

· Research and develop ideas.

· Learn about Artists, Craftspeople, and Designers from around the world who worked historically and also who work in the present day.

Impact - What will I learn?

Pupils should be taught to develop their techniques, including their control and their use of materials, with creativity, experimentation and an increasing awareness of different kinds of art, craft and design. Pupils should be taught:

  • to create sketch books to record their observations and use them to review and revisit ideas
  • to improve their mastery of art and design techniques, including drawing, painting and sculpture with a range of materials [for example, pencil, charcoal, paint, clay]
  • about great artists, architects and designers in history.

Key stage 3 overview

Pupils study a range of Art and Design disciplines throughout Key stage 3, these provide opportunities to explore new ways of personal expression, cultural understanding, creative and practical responses, promoting imaginative risk taking to provide solutions to our material, emotional, social and virtual worlds. Art, craft and design education will engage, inspire and challenge pupils, equipping them with the knowledge and skills to participate in, experiment with, invent and create their own works of art, craft and design. Pupils should be able to think creatively and critically. They should investigate and evaluate a wide range of creative outcomes from the past and present to develop rigorous understanding of the many disciplines within art, craft and design and how they shape our history and future. This will enable pupils to contribute as confident citizens and future professionals to the culture, creativity, economic success, leisure, material and emotional well-being of our society within both national and global contexts.

Key Stage 4 overview

GCSE level study allows for progression from Key Stage 3 whilst providing a strong foundation for further study at AS and A-level as well as vocational pathways. The qualification comprises of two components: A ‘Portfolio’ selected from the course of study and an ‘Externally set assignment’, the specification provides pupils with a range of creative, exciting and stimulating opportunities to develop and explore their personal interests in art and design. Students will develop the knowledge and understanding as specified below through sustained practical application of skills to realise personal intentions.

Exam Board Syllabus

AQA GCSE Art & Design (Component 1: 8201/C Component 2:8201/X) In Component 1 (portfolio) students develop responses to initial starting points, project briefs or specified tasks and realise intentions informed by research, the development and refinement of ideas and meaningful engagement with selected sources. Responses will include evidence of drawing for different purposes and needs and written annotation. In Component 2 (externally set assignment) students respond to a starting point provided by AQA. This response provides evidence of the student’s ability to work independently within specified time constraints, realise intentions that are personal and meaningful and explicitly address the requirements of all four assessment objectives

Impact - What will I learn?

· Students will learn how sources inspire the development of ideas. For example, drawing on:

· The work and approaches of artists, craftspeople or designers from contemporary and/or historical contexts, periods, societies and cultures contemporary and/or historical environments, situations or issues.

· Other relevant sources researched by the student in the chosen qualification title and area(s) of study

· The ways in which meanings, ideas and intentions can be communicated through visual and tactile language, using formal elements, including:

 · Colour

· Line

· Form

· Shape

· Tone · Texture

· The different purposes, intentions and functions of art, craft and design in a variety of contexts and as appropriate to students’ own work.
